The 13 Project Update and a New Addition to our Furry Family

Remember this post on The 13 Project.

Serena over at Pretty Fluffy created a wonderful initiative to encourage everyone to find ways (big and small) to improve the lives of animals:

The 13 Project is a Pretty Fluffy initiative that involves 13 acts of kindness towards animals before 2013.  To join, all you have to do is come up with a list of up to 13 ways you can help animals before the end of 2012. You don’t need to be a millionaire, you don’t need to have a website, or be a member of a rescue organization…All you need is the desire to make a difference. If you’re time poor, make your list just one goal — or 3 or 5 things.
It's now time for a quick update on my list.

  • Buy pet goods from Bingo's Pet Shop.  All proceeds go to support the Edmonton SPCA. *Did not have a chance to visit this shop yet, but hopefully I'll get there in the New Year.
  • Participate in Play it for Paws at Shanks Sport Bar on November 10th, 2012. *Was unable to attend this event; hopefully there will be something like this again in 2013.
  • Participate in Rescue for Life's next Clip-a-thon. *They have not had another clip-a-thon since October 2012 (hopefully they will soon!)
  • Vote for Rescue for Life's Spay and Neuter Initiative through the Aviva Community Fund. *Done and done!
  • Make a donation as part of my Christmas gifts this year.  The SPCA has some amazing gift giving ideas(including sponsoring a fostered pet for one month, medical needs, housing needs, etc).  *Just wasn't organized enough to get around to it this Christmas; but I did get an awesome gift from my brother; he adopted a Polar Bear in my name through WWF (
  • Donate gently used items to local animal shelters (food, toys, blankets, towels, dishes, leashes, collars, etc). *Done (and we also donated some new pet beds when we went boxing day shopping)!
  • Stay connected.  Participate in adoption and fundraising events in the new year. *Work in progress!
  • Have Ben's photo taken with Santa to raise funds for HART on December 8th, 2012. *Unfortunately we had the furnace cleaned that day, so did not make it out; but, I did purchase a 2013 calendar with proceeds going to Paws in Need Animal Rescue.
  • Buy meat at my local Farmer's Market.  There are farms that use humane practices such as Sunworks Farm.  *Haven't made it out to the Farmer's Market yet this winter.
  • Enquire about fostering an animal - this may have to be a New Year goal. *Done and we did foster for a short time!
  • Learn about volunteer opportunities at Dogapalooza, November 3-4th, 2012. *Done, what a fun event; another way to help in the new year-volunteer to pick up animals from the airport and surrounding communities.
  • Share my adoption story to hopefully inspire others to save a furry life. *Done in my original post.
  • Spread the word about the 13 Project. *Done through the blog and social media.

  • Now ready for the exciting news?  Not only did we foster, we wound up falling in love with the little guy and have officially adopted him (from WHARF).

    Introducing our newest fur baby...Tucker!

First bath after being picked up from WHARF.

Cuddling up to his new big brother.

All decked out after a trip to the groomers.

Ben absolutely adores Tucker and Tucker adores Ben.

Did anybody else participate in The 13 Project?
